What Task 6 asks you to do

Celmock uses 60 seconds of preparation and 60 seconds of response time for this task. Use the preparation time to choose your message and two supporting points. Do not try to write a complete script.

You agreed to share a hotel room with a colleague during a conference. Your sibling now wants to stay with you for one night, but the room only has two beds. Choose whether to speak to your sibling or your colleague. Explain the situation and propose a reasonable solution.

A complete original sample response

Hi Sam, I’d really like to see you while I’m in town, but I can’t offer you a bed in our conference room. I already agreed to share it with a colleague, and it wouldn’t be fair to change that arrangement without considering their comfort.

Could we look for an affordable room near the hotel instead? I can help you compare a few places tonight, and we could still have dinner together after my conference sessions. If staying nearby is too expensive, another option is to visit on Sunday, when I’ll have finished work and can spend more time with you. I’m sorry the original idea won’t work, but I do want to make a plan that suits both of us.

Why the response works

Choose the listener

The sample speaks to the sibling. Once that choice is made, the whole response stays directed at that person instead of describing both possible conversations.

State the conflict without blaming

The existing agreement and the colleague’s comfort explain why the request cannot simply be accepted. The speaker gives a reason, rather than making the listener sound unreasonable.

Offer a practical alternative

Looking for another room is a clear next action. Dinner together preserves the purpose of the visit. Sunday is a fallback if the first alternative is too expensive.

Keep the relationship intact

The closing acknowledges disappointment and shows willingness to help. A respectful refusal can fulfil the task without pretending there is no conflict.

Common practice mistakes to check

  • Changing whom you are addressing halfway through the recording.
  • Repeating apologies without explaining the constraint or offering an alternative.
  • Inventing a solution that ignores the prompt, such as assuming a third bed is already available.

Record, listen, then change one thing

Try a new conflict: you promised to attend a family dinner, but an important work meeting has moved to the same time. Choose whom to speak to, explain the constraint and offer a concrete alternative. The point is negotiation, not reusing the hotel story.

  • Answer once without looking at the sample. Listen for whether the main message is clear early in the recording.
  • Check whether each point has a reason or detail. If a sentence adds no new information, replace it rather than speaking faster.
  • Check whether the tone fits the listener and whether you finish within the timer. Do not use a pronunciation score as a substitute for checking the content.

Try a fresh question with feedback

This public example is for independent study. The practice selector opens the platform’s published questions of the same task type; it does not automatically load this editorial prompt into the rated question bank.

Each AI rating of a speaking or writing answer uses 1 voucher. You get 5 free vouchers when you confirm your email and 1 more each day you visit (you can hold up to 5). Listening and reading are always free.
