For applicants aged 18–54 when signing the citizenship application, the language requirement is CLB 4 or higher in listening and speaking. Before booking a new test, check whether IRCC already accepts a document you have.
First: do you already have accepted language proof?
Follow IRCC’s language-proof checklist before buying preparation or booking an exam. Accepted evidence can include qualifying education completed in English or French, accepted language-training evidence or an accepted test result. Check the document requirements, not just the language you usually speak.
For CELPIP-General and General LS tests taken on or after 1 April 2014, the published requirement is at least 4 in both listening and speaking. IRCC accepts expired results from these tests for citizenship. Older results have different reporting rules; use the official documents page to check them.

Start with your age and existing proof. You may not need a new exam.

IRCC accepts both CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS for citizenship language proof when the listening and speaking results meet the requirement. General assesses all four skills; General LS assesses listening and speaking. Check your other planned applications before choosing a test.
Express Entry is different: it requires CELPIP-General, not LS. Citizenship language proof and the citizenship knowledge test are also separate requirements. Preparing for CELPIP does not replace preparing for the citizenship knowledge test.
| Purpose | CELPIP test | Language target |
|---|---|---|
| Citizenship language proof | General or General LS | Listening 4+; Speaking 4+ |
| Express Entry | General | Program-specific four-skill minimums |
Practise listening for the information you need
Start with one short listening task. On your first listen, identify who is speaking, the purpose of the conversation and the action someone needs to take. Answer the questions, then replay the parts you misunderstood and check the wording.
Keep a short note of why an answer was wrong: missed detail, unfamiliar phrase or confusion about the speaker’s intention. Practise that issue in the next session rather than replaying everything without a purpose.
Listening practice
Choose one part and review your answers. These are CELPIP-General practice materials.

Make a short recording about an everyday situation: give advice, describe an experience or explain a preference. Listen back for whether the main idea is clear and whether you gave enough detail for someone else to follow.
Use AI feedback to choose one improvement, then answer a new prompt. Celmock feedback is a practice estimate, not official language proof or a guarantee of level 4. Our materials prepare CELPIP-General skills; we do not offer an official General LS simulation.
Speaking practice
Choose a task, record an answer and review one concrete improvement. AI feedback uses your available allowance.

- Check the test version, identification requirements, location, date and fee in the official booking service.
- Keep the official result and follow the document instructions for your citizenship application. Celmock does not submit an application for you.
Questions, answered
What CELPIP score is needed for Canadian citizenship?
For current CELPIP-General or General LS results, at least 4 in both listening and speaking. Applicants aged 18–54 when signing generally need accepted language proof; check IRCC for your circumstances.
Do I need reading and writing for citizenship language proof?
The citizenship language requirement concerns listening and speaking. If you book CELPIP-General, the test itself includes all four skills; General LS includes listening and speaking only.
Can I use expired CELPIP results for citizenship?
IRCC accepts expired CELPIP-General and General LS results for citizenship if they meet the applicable score and document rules. Do not apply the Express Entry two-year validity rule to citizenship automatically.
Does Celmock provide citizenship language proof?
No. Practice answers, AI estimates and progress records are not official language proof.
